Identifications:
Length 10cm (4in). A small, compact, red-billed finch of India & southeast Asia.
Adult male (breeding):bright red, speckled with white spots; vent & under-tail-coverts dark brown or black, tinged with red.
Adult female: bright red rump, grey-brown upper-parts, white spots at tips of coverts.
Juvenile and non-breeding adult male: both similar as female.
First-year males moult into adult non-breeding plumage before acquiring full breeding plumage.
Song:
A feeble or weak but high-pitched warble with softer & sweeter twittering notes, given by male usually from top.
Call:
Usually a thin 'teei' or ' tsi', but also a variety of high-pitched chirps or squeaks.
